Cancer Survivors – Part 1

without comments

It can be a little simpler to put life into perspective when you are around people who do something they’re passionate about because they love it. When those people have been faced with a life changing and life threatening situation, it’s astounding to witness.

Such is the case with cancer survivor dragon boaters.

We had an opportunity to speak at a fundraiser for a cancer survivor dragon boat club. We watched them all excitingly get in the boat for an exhibition paddle. These paddlers (mostly women) probably never saw themselves as athletes or dragon boaters, but it has changed their lives – just as cancer did.

Dragon boaters who are also cancer survivors or cancer battlers are people who often endure treatments or other health concerns and still get in that boat and paddle. They could come up with every reason or excuse in the world why they can’t or shouldn’t do such a thing, but instead they are driven toward it. In fact, sometimes it seems they are more driven than many others.

It’s a support group on water. And you don’t even have to talk, because everyone knows already – if not what you’ve been through, probably something similar.

These are the people who make me feel like I can accomplish anything, because if they can face such a daunting scare and come out on top, I know the little issues I face are easy in comparison.
