Cancer Survivors – Part 2
What is it about dragon boating that makes them feel some sense of empowerment? And why do cancer survivors do it?
I think there are many answers and everyone brings something different into that boat. The primary answers are these:
~ Almost anyone can be a dragon boater (even through cancer treatments).
~ Being on the water is peaceful.
~ Not having to think about life, in general, seems like the right thing to do.
~ Having control over something that does not control you is uplifting.
~ Pushing yourself and paddling with others who are doing the same feels good.
~ Competing just feels right!
These are just a few speculative answers based on what we know about dragon boating and cancer survivors, having been around both – as fellow paddlers and coaches. If you are a cancer survivor dragon boater, please comment on this page and let us know what it is that draws you to this great sport!
