Why Start a Dragon Boat Festival

without comments

If you’re a fundraiser for a non-profit in just about any city, you want to start a dragon boat festival to make money.  If executed properly, it can be highly successful for years. In Chattanooga, in its third year upcoming, the T.C. Thompson Children’s Hospital Foundation says it is now their signature event. They have actually dropped some events because the revenue from the dragon boat festival was so (unexpectedly) high. During last year’s event – produced by Dynamic Events & Management LLC – paddlers raised $115,000. In three charity related events produced by DEM, 135 teams raised more than $256,000. Pledge amounts grow each year. More registered teams means a better fundraising campaign.

Dragon boating is a fun paddling odyssey, involving 20-plus members of a company or organization. It is a memorable experience, which is why the return rate on teams grows each year. The number of new teams typically increases as well. In Chattanooga, 32 teams competed the first year, 44 the next! Word-of-mouth brings more participation. Knoxville grew from 25-30 teams, to 43 last year. Teams come back for something unique and cultural, a what-happens-in-the-boat-stays-in-the-boat mentality, and for adrenaline pumping competition. They also provide true buy-in for the feel good aspect of also giving back to the community. The event location, event organization and totality of the experience contribute to effectiveness.

A Dragon Boat Festival is worth doing for many reasons. With fundraising challenges now and ahead, it is worth a gamble. And it is incredibly engaging!
